Sometimes everything works our just right. It did for Loretta Juda and Milan Salchak seven months ago. Loretta, recovering from cancer and suffering from seizures, phoned Mobile Meals for assistance. About the same time, Milan Salchak, a Mobile Meals volunteer shopper, was awaiting a new client. Berta Cymerman, our Grocery Getter Coordinator, contacted Loretta and Milan and a team was born. For these past months, Milan has faithfully come to Loretta’s home once a week, picked up her neatly written shopping list, purchased her groceries at the supermarketand brought them back to her home.
It was simple and kind and so needed and appreciated. Loretta, a widow with three stepchildren who live out of town, is a former licensed social worker at United Disability Services. She is quick to say, “I would never have made it without Milan. He came to help when I really needed someone.” As for Milan, he is married to Patti, they have two grown sons and he is a real estate broker with Cutler Realty. His reasoning is, “I enjoy shopping for others and meeting new people. I recommend this.”
A bit of serendipity, as Milan and Loretta got to know one another, they discovered that one of Milan’s sons sold Loretta and her husband their home 23 years ago. Although Loretta has some lingering health issues, she is well enough to shop for herself and she is now interested in helping at Mobile Meals. Since Loretta no longer needs a shopper, Milan has already been contacted by Berta who has another client for him. Although Loretta and Milan are no longer client and shopper, each has made a new friend.
